GONZALES, TX – Selma resident Greg Switzer’s recent announcement of his campaign for the State Representative seat in House District 44 has sparked considerable interest. Switzer, a retired Marine with 31 years of service, stood on the steps of the historic Gonzales Courthouse on October 7th, ready to embark on his political journey.
John Kuempel, who has represented the 44th District in the Texas House of Representatives since winning a special election in December 2010, has been a prominent figure in Texas politics. He assumed the position after his father, Edmund Kuempel, who held the 44th District seat from 1983, passed away.
However, it’s his recent actions that have drawn significant attention and some controversy. Kuempel’s vote to impeach Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has left a lasting impact on his reputation in conservative circles.
In a move that the vast majority of conservative Texans have vehemently objected to, Kuempel’s vote to impeach Paxton raised eyebrows and garnered criticism. The impeachment process was a contentious issue that divided many along party lines. Fortunately for Paxton, he was ultimately acquitted of all charges, but the political consequences of the impeachment vote still linger.
Greg Switzer, who proudly aligns his beliefs with the Republican Party of Texas Principles and Platform, is entering the race with a focus on representing the conservative values of his constituents. With a background that includes 31 years of service in the United States Marine Corps, Switzer’s commitment to service is undeniable. He graduated from Parris Island in 1981 and was assigned to the Fleet Marine Force 2nd Battalion 8th Marines, also known as “America’s Regiment.”
Switzer’s academic achievements are equally impressive, including a Bachelor’s degree in Government and Macroeconomics from George Mason University in 1988. In 1991, he graduated from Officer Candidate School and furthered his education by earning a law degree from Yale Law School in 2000. His political journey began as an inaugural member of the George Mason Young Republicans Club, and he has since worked for several campaigns in Virginia and Texas.
His campaign website, switzerfortexas.com, promises to provide more detailed information about his platform. Still, his stated priorities of combating illegal immigration, lowering taxes, and addressing unconstitutional mandates have resonated with many in the district.
As the race for House District 44 heats up, the contest between Switzer and Kuempel will be closely watched. Switzer’s campaign is a clear challenge to the incumbent’s tenure, focusing on the issues important to conservative Texans. With a background that includes military service, legal education, and involvement in the Republican Party, Switzer aims to build a strong case for why he is the better choice for the district.
While John Kuempel has made his mark on Texas politics, the upcoming primary will be a pivotal moment for the district’s voters to decide whether they wish to continue with the status quo or opt for a fresh face in Greg Switzer, who promises a different approach to representing the interests of House District 44.
